Long Twin (PLL)
Long twin 4-pin CFLs, commonly called PLL lamps, feature an elongated dual-tube design with a 2G11 4-pin base for electronic ballast operation. These lamps deliver high lumen output in a slim, linear-style form factor that fits both compact and extended fixture types.
Brand Naming Conventions
The PLL format is marketed under the following names:
- Philips (Signify): PL-L — the standard name for the long twin format. The 4-pin version is the default; the less common 2-pin version is explicitly marked as "PL-L 2-pin."
- GE: Biax L
- Sylvania (Ledvance): Dulux L
You may also encounter the designation FT40 on some long twin lamps, particularly in specifications and ballast compatibility charts. FT40 is an industry-standard designation (similar to how F32T8 identifies a 4-foot T8 tube) rather than a brand name.
2G11 Base: 2-Pin vs. 4-Pin
Both the 2-pin and 4-pin long twin lamps use the 2G11 base form factor, but they are not interchangeable. The 4-pin version has four contact pins and requires an electronic ballast, while the 2-pin version has two contact pins with an integrated starter for magnetic ballasts. Verify your fixture's ballast type before ordering.
PLL lamps are widely used in commercial ceiling fixtures, surface-mounted luminaires, and industrial task lighting where a long, high-output CFL is preferred over a standard linear tube.
