GU24-base spiral CFLs combine the familiar twist shape of a screw-in spiral with a 2-pin plug-in connector, designed for fixtures that use dedicated pin-socket ballasts instead of standard Edison sockets. These lamps are most commonly found in recessed downlights, enclosed ceiling fixtures, and wall sconces in commercial and residential settings — particularly in California and other regions where Title 24 energy codes require pin-base fixtures to prevent swapping in less efficient lamps.

GU24 Base Explained

The GU24 is a twist-lock 2-pin base with a 24mm pin spread. Unlike G24d bases used in double and triple tube CFLs, the GU24 does not have wattage-specific keying — fixtures accept a range of wattages in the same socket. Common wattages include:

  • 13W — replaces 60W incandescent
  • 18W — replaces 75W incandescent
  • 23W — replaces 100W incandescent
  • 26W–27W — replaces 100W+ incandescent

Available in color temperatures from 2700K (warm white) through 5000K (daylight), with 2700K and 4100K being the most widely stocked options.

GU24 vs. Screw-In Spirals

These lamps are functionally identical to standard medium-base (E26) spiral CFLs in terms of light output and shape, but the GU24 pin base means they are not interchangeable with standard screw-in sockets. The pin-base design was introduced specifically for energy code compliance — the dedicated socket prevents homeowners and tenants from replacing efficient CFLs with incandescent bulbs.
